The National Commission on Small Arms and Light Weapons (Natcom SALW) is the lead government body of The Gambia, established to coordinate national efforts, develop policy, and implement actions to control SALW proliferation.
The National Commission on Small Arms and Light Weapons (Natcom SALW) is the lead government body of The Gambia, established under the National Commission Against the Proliferation of Small Arms and Light Weapons Act of 2009.
Domiciled at the Ministry of Interior building in Kotu, its mandate is to prevent and combat the illicit proliferation of Small Arms and Light Weapons. The Commission coordinates national efforts, develops policy, and implements actions in line with the ECOWAS Convention of 2006, the Arms Trade Treaty, and other international frameworks.
Its current strategic focus is the development of The Gambia’s first National Action Plan (NAP) on SALW control, supported by partners including the UN Regional Centre for Peace and Disarmament in Africa (UNREC) and the European Union.
Mr. Ebrima Deen Savage, Secretary General.
Ebrima Deen Savage leads the National Commission on Small Arms and Light Weapons (NatCom SALW), bringing a distinctive and practical approach to arms control. He believes effective policy is built on direct experience and continuous research, vital for addressing the complex and dynamic challenges of SALW proliferation.
His diverse career provides a strong foundation for this role. It began within the National Security Service under the Office of the President, followed by over two decades as an ICT and Administration Specialist. He has served as an IT Manager, a Consultant for the World Bank on national digitalization projects, and an Administrator for major institutions like Standard Chartered Bank.
Outside of his official duties, Ebrima is a passionate sportsman, regularly cycling, playing table tennis, and practicing martial arts. He also has a keen interest in civil engineering and construction.
